Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing
Quick answer
Kickboxing arose in Japan in the sixties by combining karate with Muay Thai rules, from which it dropped elbows and throws and limited the clinch. Muay Thai fights with fists, elbows, knees and shins and in the clinch, kickboxing is a set of several rule sets from point fighting on tatami to K-1 in the ring. Both sports have had full IOC recognition since 2021, neither is in the Olympic programme.

History and relationship
Kickboxing arose in Japan from karate and Muay Thai. The karateka Tatsuo Yamada took an interest in Thai boxing, and the promoter Osamu Noguchi then combined karate with Thai rules into a sport with a name of its own.
- 1959: the first Thai boxing bout in Japan, Yamada proposes the name karate-boxing.
- 1963: three karate fighters from Masutatsu Oyama’s dojo met Thai boxers in Bangkok.
- 1966: Noguchi founds an association, the first event under the name kickboxing in Osaka. The Japanese rules then dropped elbows and throws and limited the clinch.
- 1993: K-1 is founded, the Thai fighter Buakaw Banchamek won the K-1 World MAX tournament in 2004 and 2006.
- 2021: full IOC recognition for IFMA and WAKO.
Technique
- Eight weapons: fists, elbows, knees and shins.
- Kicks to the head, trunk and legs.
- The clinch is permitted and the referee breaks it with the command yaek.
- Prohibited (IFMA): groin strikes, strikes to the ankle, to the back of the head, headbutts.
- WAKO K1 style: knees yes, clinch and elbows no, sweeps only at ankle level.
- American full contact: punches and kicks only above the waist, no knees or clinch.
- Point fighting: stopped after every hit, no knees, elbows or clinch.
Kicks and punching technique are shared. The difference is at short range: Muay Thai fights there with elbows, knees and the clinch, kickboxing shortens or prohibits it according to the rules.
Training
| Muay Thai | Kickboxing | |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | running, skipping rope, shadow boxing, pads, medicine ball | we have not been able to confirm how a lesson is structured |
| Rounds | 3–5 minutes with a rest of 1–2 minutes | WAKO grading: from the brown belt rounds of 1 minute |
| Sparring | part of training, share not confirmed | WAKO: controlled from the green belt, full contact at 2nd dan |
| Clinch | an independently trained skill | prohibited or short depending on the discipline |
The content of a kickboxing lesson differs by the discipline the club prepares for, tatami or ring.

| Who awards | the trainer hands over the mongkhon headband | 1st to 3rd dan the national federation, from 4th dan WAKO |
Kickboxing under WAKO has an examination system with belts and dan grades, Muay Thai measures level mainly by fights.

- Polish club study (40 trainees): injury in training in 55%.
- Lystad 2015 (Nevada, 15 years): 390.1 injuries per 1,000 exposures, 57.8% to the head.
- Professionals roughly 2.5 times more often than amateurs.
- We have not found a study of injuries in point fighting and light contact.
Who it suits
| Muay Thai (IFMA) | Kickboxing (WAKO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest competition age | categories from age 10 | tatami from age 7, ring from age 15 |
| Seniors | 17–40 | 19–40 |
| Veterans | not in the IFMA rules | tatami: masters 41–55 |
| Women | the same weight classes and rules as men, chest protector mandatory | own, lower weight limits, chest protector from older cadet girls |
Children
| Muay Thai | Kickboxing | |
|---|---|---|
| Competition from | IFMA age 10, the Thai law of 1999 gives over 15 | WAKO age 7, tatami only |
| Prohibited | we have not found any special technique bans for children in the IFMA rules | ring disciplines until age 15 |
| Protection | trunk protector, helmet, shin and elbow guards | helmet, mouthguard, groin guard, in point fighting a mask |
| Bout length | 3 × 1 to 3 × 2 minutes depending on age | we have not been able to confirm the WAKO rules for children |
| Studies of children | abstract (333 child boxers): lower IQ, declining with the length of boxing | France 2016–2018: 1,340 treatments of 10 to 18-year-olds from combat sports, not broken down by sport |
| Statements by physicians | Ramathibodi Hospital: under 10 no contact, under 15 no hits to the head | we have not found any for kickboxing, AAP and CPS (2011) speak about boxing |
Self-defence
- Sparring and the clinch against a partner’s resistance.
- Stance and clinch with fists, kicks, elbows and knees.
- The ground and weapons are not developed by modern Muay Thai.
- Sparring against resistance in ring disciplines, in point fighting controlled contact.
- Distance of punches and kicks, WAKO rules prohibit the clinch and throws.
- The ground, throws, weapons and multiple attackers are not trained.
Both arts train against real resistance standing. Muay Thai also covers the clinch, kickboxing excludes it in most rules. Neither covers the ground, and we have not found a study of transfer to real self-defence for either.
Practical use
| Muay Thai | Kickboxing | |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness classes | IFMA lists fitness classes for every level | cardio kickboxing, a fitness class without an opponent |
| Fitness load | we have not been able to confirm it | ACE (Kravitz, 15 women): 75–85% of maximum heart rate, about 350–450 kcal per hour |
| Study at an older age | 30 seniors aged 60–70, Muay Thai dance: after 8 weeks improvement in mobility and strength | Radboudumc, Parkinson’s disease, 10 weeks: boxing with and without kicks improved balance equally |
| Competition at an older age | IFMA up to 40 | WAKO tatami masters up to 55 |
The studies concern small groups and short programmes, a cardio kickboxing study says nothing about competitive training. No general conclusion about suitability can be drawn from them.

Switching and combining
- Kicks, fists and fitness from rounds carry over.
- Unlearning the clinch, elbows and catching kicks.
- Getting used to shorter rounds and the pace from the first round.
- Kicks, fists and the habit of full contact carry over.
- Learning the clinch, elbows and knees from the clinch.
- Spreading the pace over a longer bout.
On the left the move from Muay Thai to kickboxing, on the right the opposite direction. Buakaw Banchamek moved from the Muay Thai stadiums to K-1 and won K-1 World MAX twice. Superbon Singha Mawynn, a former ONE kickboxing champion, lost a Muay Thai title bout and said that in kickboxing there are fewer weapons.
Philosophy
- Wai khru ram muay: respect for the teacher, parents and ancestors.
- Three bows to the Buddha, the dhamma and the sangha.
- The mongkhon headband as a tribute to the gym.
- We have not been able to confirm a philosophy or ritual of its own.
- A modern sport that arose in the 20th century, with rules written for television and competition.
Forms and terminology
Muay Thai has no scored forms, ram muay is a mandatory personal ritual before a bout, according to IFMA at most two minutes. Kickboxing under WAKO has forms as a separate tatami discipline without fighting: they are performed against an imaginary opponent, with or without music, with or without a weapon, individually and in teams.
Training culture
- Thai referee commands: yoot, yaek, chok.
- Muay Thai Day is celebrated in Thailand on 17 March.
- At Rajadamnern stadium betting is legal from the second floor using hand signals.
- In Japan after 1966 a television boom around Tadashi Sawamura, a decline in the seventies.
- In the USA WKA champions such as Benny Urquidez, the film Kickboxer (1989) with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
- The culture is divided into ring and tatami, we have not been able to confirm customs in the gym.
Common misconceptions
- Kickboxing is not the same as Muay Thai: the Japanese rules dropped elbows and throws and limited the clinch.
- Kickboxing does not have a single set of rules: point fighting, K1 style, full contact and K-1 differ in knees and the clinch.
- IOC recognition from 2021 does not mean an Olympic sport.
- Cardio kickboxing is a fitness class without an opponent, not competitive kickboxing.
Which to choose
Frequently asked questions
Is kickboxing Muay Thai without elbows?
In part. Japanese kickboxing grew out of Muay Thai and dropped elbows and throws. Knees and the clinch differ by rules: K-1 allows knees and the clinch for 5 seconds, American full contact neither.
Is either of them Olympic?
No. IFMA and WAKO have both had full IOC recognition since 2021, both sports are at the World Games and the European Games.
Do they have belts?
Kickboxing under WAKO has an optional examination system up to dan grades. Muay Thai has no uniform system, some schools use pra jiad.
