Mestre is the Portuguese word for master and represents the highest recognized rank in Capoeira, typically earned by a practitioner only after several decades of practice, teaching, and active contribution to the community. The title is not awarded solely on the basis of physical skill; it also takes into account playing musical instruments (especially the berimbau), knowledge of songs, the history and rituals of Capoeira, and the ability to lead one's own school (grupo). A mestre is traditionally appointed by another recognized mestre or a council of senior masters at a ceremony called batizado or troca de cordas. In the hierarchy of Capoeira Regional and other modern styles, the title of mestre is preceded by the rank of contramestre, which serves as a kind of preparation for the highest level. Within the Capoeira community, a mestre is seen not just as a technical expert but as the guardian and transmitter of the art's entire cultural and spiritual tradition.
