Pendekar is the term in Indonesia and Malaysia for an experienced, respected silat master. It is not usually awarded by examination but by recognition from the community and the school's teachers. Besides fighting skill, a pendekar is expected to have wisdom and moral authority. In general speech and literature the word also means a hero or warrior. Some silat organisations now use it as a formal title of the highest level.
