Pendekar is a title awarded in Pencak Silat to a highly experienced and widely respected martial arts master who has demonstrated not only mastery of technique but also wisdom, moral integrity, and a deep understanding of their style's philosophy. Unlike formal ranks such as belts or dan grades, the title of pendekar is traditionally not awarded through an examination but rather through years of recognition by the community and teachers within a given school (aliran or perguruan). Historically, pendekars were not only combat experts but often also community leaders, healers, or guardians of a village's or region's traditional values. In modern Indonesia and Malaysia, the title still carries great prestige and is often bestowed on ceremonial occasions at a national level as recognition of a lifetime contribution to martial arts. In a broader linguistic context, the word pendekar is also used outside martial arts to denote a hero or a fighter for a just cause.
