Definition
Batizado is a ceremonial event in Capoeira whose name literally means baptism, marking a new student's first official performance in the roda (circle) in front of the entire school, guests, and teachers. During the batizado, the student plays Capoeira for the first time with a more experienced practitioner, usually their mestre, and after this symbolic game receives their first cord (corda), corresponding to the school's color-grading system. An integral part of the ceremony is also the granting of a nickname (apelido), by which the student will thereafter be known within the Capoeira community – a tradition dating back to when practitioners chose nicknames to conceal their identity from authorities. Batizado is usually held once a year and is often accompanied by visiting masters from other schools, workshops, and a large musical production with drums and berimbau. Batizado is often followed by a related ceremony called troca de cordas, during which advanced students move up to a higher cord level.
