Shotokan vs. Wado-ryu
Quick answer
Wado-ryu was founded by Hironori Otsuka, a master of Shindo Yoshin-ryu jujutsu who trained with Gichin Funakoshi from 1922 and was his assistant. Shotokan builds on deep long stances and attacks from a distance, Wado-ryu on taisabaki, simultaneous defence and counterattack, and on joint locks and throws in paired forms. Wado-ryu kept the Okinawan names of the kata, for example Pinan instead of Heian.

History and relationship
Hironori Otsuka came to Funakoshi as a master of jujutsu with menkyo kaiden in Shindo Yoshin-ryu (1921). He trained karate with him from 1922, received a black belt in 1924 and was his assistant until 1927, or a year longer. At the beginning of the thirties they parted ways, the sources give philosophical disagreements or a different style of teaching.
- At the end of the twenties Otsuka also trains with Choki Motobu, and Kenwa Mabuni teaches him as well.
- 1 April 1934: Otsuka opens the Dai Nippon Karate Shinko Kai, the name Wado-ryu comes later.
- Registration of the name: the sources give 1938, March 1939 simultaneously with Shotokan-ryu, or 1940.
- 1964: Wado-ryu joins the Japan Karate Federation.
- JKA splits from 1974, Wado-ryu after Otsuka’s death in 1982.
Technique
- Deep long stances, kokutsu dachi in almost all kata, kiba dachi in Tekki.
- ITKF: the strike ends within 5 cm of the head or 3 cm of the trunk, the kick within 10 or 5 cm.
- ITKF prohibits grabbing, pushing and dangerous throws.
- Sanmi ittai: every technique means a change of position and a shift of weight.
- Taisabaki: the defender steps out of the line of attack, defence and counterattack happen simultaneously.
- Joint locks and throws from Shindo Yoshin-ryu, taisabaki also from the kenjutsu of Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, the targets are kyusho.
Shotokan builds on a long stance and attacks from a distance, Wado-ryu on shifting the body out of the attack. We have not found kumite rules specific to Wado-ryu, in competition the general karate rules apply.

| Paired exercises | gohon kumite from 8th kyu, ippon kumite from 6th kyu, jiyu ippon kumite from 3rd kyu | kihon kumite 10 sequences, kumite gata 10–24 techniques depending on the organisation, ohyo kumite |
| Seated and against a weapon | we have not found it in the JKA syllabus | idori seated, tanto dori against a knife, shinken shirahadori against a sword |

Wado-ryu adds to the agreed sequences also sequences from jujutsu in which the attacker holds a weapon. We have not been able to document the ratio of technique, sparring and conditioning.

We have not been able to document the belt colours and examination regulations of the Japanese Wado-ryu organisations.
Physical load and risks
- Swanson, Morrissey and Barragan (The Sport Journal, 2017), an overview of Shotokan tournament studies: injuries in 20.5% of bouts and in 23.6% of persons.
- Most often contusions (46.9%) and nosebleeds (19.9%), data of De Souza et al. 2011.
- We have not found a study of injuries explicitly about Wado-ryu.
- For karate in general: a meta-analysis by Lystad et al. (Br J Sports Med 2020), 28 kumite studies, 88.3 injuries per 1,000 exposures, most often to the head and neck.

Self-defence
- Kihon, kata, agreed kumite and jiyu kumite with controlled contact.
- The ITKF competition rules exclude grabbing, throws and strikes to the eyes, throat and groin.
- Paired sequences against an attack: kihon kumite, idori seated, tanto dori against a knife, shinken shirahadori against a sword.
- Wado-ryu Karatedo Renmei also teaches Wadoryu jujutsu kenpo.
Wado-ryu practises grips and defences against a weapon in its sequences, Shotokan does not allow grips in ITKF competition. We have not found a study of transfer to self-defence for either of them.

For karate in general, a randomised study by Witte et al. (J Sport Health Sci 2016) in 89 older people found after five months improvements in motor reactivity, stress tolerance and divided attention. We have not found a study explicitly about Shotokan or Wado-ryu, so the studies do not allow a general suitability for adults to be inferred.

The WKF list (January 2026, 102 kata) does not mark styles for the kata, and we have not found which kata were performed in Tokyo 2020.

Switching and combining
- Heian correspond to Pinan, but in Wado-ryu Pinan Nidan is learned first.
- According to a comparison of the syllabi, Tekki corresponds to the kata Naihanchi, of which Wado-ryu practises only the first part.
- Hangetsu and Seishan are versions of the kata Seisan, Gankaku and Chinto two names of the same kata.
- Learning taisabaki, joint locks, throws and the sequences idori and tanto dori.
- Pinan, Naihanchi, Seishan and Chinto have a counterpart in Shotokan under a Japanese name.
- The JKA syllabus has 27 kata, compared with Otsuka’s nine official kata a number of forms are added.
- Adding deep long stances, kokutsu dachi and kiba dachi.
- In competition under ITKF, grabbing and throws are dropped.
On the left the transition from Shotokan to Wado-ryu, on the right the opposite direction. We have not found documented transfers between JKA and Wado-ryu organisations.
Philosophy
- Niju kun: Funakoshi’s twenty principles from bushido and Zen.
- Dojo kun: five principles displayed in the dojo.
- Funakoshi preached karate without division into schools and did not name the style himself.
- Wa means harmony, do the way and ryu the school.
- Harmony does not mean pacifism but the recognition that yielding can overcome brute force.
- The character wa is also the character for Japan.
Funakoshi did not name the style himself, Wado-ryu carries the principle of yielding directly in its name.
Forms and terminology
Kata are the foundation of both styles, the scope of the syllabus differs. Nakayama set 27 kata for the JKA, the sources give 26, 27 or 29. In a book from 1977 Otsuka determined nine official kata: five Pinan, Kushanku, Naihanchi, Seishan and Chinto.
Funakoshi changed some Okinawan names because of pronunciation in Japanese, Pinan to Heian, Otsuka kept the Okinawan names.
Training culture
- The name Shotokan comes from the sign that the students hung above Funakoshi’s hall.
- A salute on command is already part of the JKA exam for 10th kyu.
- Otsuka held the menkyo kaiden of Shindo Yoshin-ryu from Tatsusaburo Nakayama.
- In 1972 he received the title meijin, the sources give IMAF Japan or Kokusai Budo Renmei as the conferring body.
Common misconceptions
- That Otsuka was the fourth grandmaster of Shindo Yoshin-ryu is a widespread error: the third grandmaster Matsuoka Tatsuo outlived him by almost eight years.
- Taisabaki is often wrongly described as dodging. It is stepping out of the line of attack, in which defence and counterattack happen simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wado-ryu derive from Shotokan?
In part. Otsuka trained with Funakoshi from 1922 and was his assistant, but he also learned from Motobu and Mabuni and brought the jujutsu of Shindo Yoshin-ryu.
Do both styles belong to the Japan Karate Federation?
Yes. Wado-ryu joined the federation in 1964 and Otsuka was among the figures of the unification. In JKF competition each style has its own group of designated kata.
Does Wado-ryu also teach defence against a weapon?
In paired sequences yes: tanto dori against a knife and shinken shirahadori against a sword. We have not found kata with a weapon in Wado-ryu or in the JKA syllabus.
