Shotokan vs. Shito-ryu
Quick answer
Both Shotokan and Shito-ryu descend from the line of Anko Itosu, but Kenwa Mabuni added to it the Naha-te of Kanryo Higaonna and kept Okinawan kata names such as Pinan and Naihanchi. Shotokan builds on deep long stances, Shito-ryu on five principles of defence and a higher stance in fighting. Funakoshi learned some kata from Mabuni and sent his son Gigo to him in Osaka.

History and relationship
Both styles descend from the Shuri-te line of Anko Itosu, who taught both Gichin Funakoshi and Kenwa Mabuni. Mabuni added the Naha-te of Kanryo Higaonna, to whom he was introduced by Chojun Miyagi, and composed the name Shito-ryu from the first characters of the names Itosu and Higaonna.
Funakoshi learned some kata from Mabuni and sent his son Gigo to him in Osaka. According to Kenzo Mabuni, in 1945 Masatoshi Nakayama and Isao Obata, later founders of the JKA, were also sent there to train.
- In 1917 and 1928 Mabuni travels to Tokyo, by 1929 at the latest he settles in Osaka.
- Shito-ryu was at first called Hanko-ryu, the sources place the founding in 1931 or 1934, and the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai registered the style in 1939.
- 1949: the JKA is founded, after Mabuni’s death in 1952 Shito-ryu divides between his sons Kenei and Kenzo and other branches.
Technique
- Deep long stances, kokutsu dachi in almost all kata, kiba dachi in Tekki.
- Gigo Funakoshi replaced shiko dachi and neko ashi dachi in the kata with the stances kiba dachi and kokutsu dachi.
- ITKF: the strike must end within 5 cm of the head or 3 cm of the trunk.
- According to the description of the style, a fight begins from a higher and more upright stance than in Shotokan.
- Sanchin dachi from the Naha-te line.
- Five principles of defence, uke no go gensoku: rakka, ryusui, kusshin, ten’i, hangeki.
The difference is visible in defence. Shito-ryu spells it out from a hard block that destroys the attack, through stepping out of the line, to a counterattack simultaneous with deflection. Prohibited hits in competition are determined by the organisation, under WKF the same rules apply to both.
Training
| Shotokan | Shito-ryu | |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | kihon, kata, kumite | kata linked with kumite through bunkai kumite (Shito-kai) |
| Kumite by grade | JKA: gohon kumite from 8th kyu, ippon kumite from 6th kyu, jiyu ippon kumite from 3rd kyu | we have not found it |
| Principle of learning | kumite from the basic to the advanced level (Nakayama) | shu-ha-ri: hold the basics, develop them, become independent |
| Structure of a lesson | we have not found it | we have not found it |
Shotokan JKA leads kumite from agreed sequences to free sparring, Shito-ryu builds on converting the analysis of kata into work in pairs. We have not been able to document the ratio of kata, sparring and conditioning.
Progression and ranks
| Shotokan (JKA) | Shito-ryu | |
|---|---|---|
| Grades | 10 kyu and 10 dan | we have not found the kyu and dan system of Shito-ryu organisations |

The kata of the JKA path to black belt, that is Heian, Tekki and Bassai Dai, have counterparts in Shito-ryu under the Okinawan names Pinan, Naihanchi and Bassai. We have not been able to document the examination regulations of Shito-ryu.
Physical load and risks
- Swanson, Morrissey and Barragan (The Sport Journal, 2017), an overview of Shotokan tournament studies: injuries in 20.5% of bouts and in 23.6% of persons.
- De Wet and Yelverton (J Funct Morphol Kinesiol, 2025), a questionnaire of 155 adults: 47.3% reported at least four injuries.
- We have not found a study of injuries explicitly about Shito-ryu.
- For karate in general (Lystad et al., Br J Sports Med 2020, 28 kumite studies): 88.3 injuries per 1,000 exposures, most often to the head and neck.

Self-defence
- Kihon, kata and agreed kumite, free sparring with controlled contact.
- The ITKF rules exclude grabbing, pushing, dangerous throws and sweeps to the knees.
- We have not found a JKA self-defence programme.
- Five principles of defence, including stepping out of the line of attack and a counterattack simultaneous with the block.
- Mabuni created the kata Aoyagi for the self-defence of women.
- We have not found a self-defence programme or a study of effectiveness.
Shotokan trains a precise hit from a distance and stopping it, Shito-ryu names the ways of receiving an attack. The clinch and the ground are not covered by competition in either, and we have not found a study of transfer to self-defence.
Practical use
| Shotokan | Shito-ryu | |
|---|---|---|
| Programmes for adults | we have not found it, JKA also examines candidates over 60 | kata Aoyagi for the self-defence of women, we have not found a programme |

Switching and combining
- Heian and Bassai Dai have the counterparts Pinan and Bassai, and according to an analysis of the lists Tekki corresponds to Naihanchi.
- Kata of the Higaonna line are added, for example Seipai and Kururunfa, and the stance sanchin dachi.
- Getting used to a higher stance in fighting.
- Pinan, Naihanchi and Bassai are practised as Heian, Tekki and Bassai Dai with deeper stances.
- Learning long stances and kokutsu dachi.
- The JKA syllabus does not have Seipai or Kururunfa.
On the left the transition from Shotokan to Shito-ryu, on the right the opposite direction. The common Itosu line gives both a number of the same kata under different names. We have not found documented transfers of competitors.
Philosophy
- Niju kun: Funakoshi’s twenty principles from bushido and Zen.
- Dojo kun: five principles displayed in the dojo.
- Funakoshi: the goal of karate is neither victory nor defeat but the development of character.
- Shu-ha-ri: hold the basics, develop them, become independent (Shito-kai).
- Mabuni: karate should be taught to everyone who seeks knowledge with sincerity and integrity.
The names of the styles arose in opposite ways. Funakoshi preached karate without division into schools and the name Shotokan was given to his hall by his students after his pen name Shoto. Mabuni composed the name himself from the first characters of his teachers, and before that he called the style Hanko-ryu, a half-hard style.
Forms and terminology
Kata are the foundation of both styles, they differ in the breadth of the syllabus. The JKA syllabus has 27 kata, the sources give 26, 27 or 29. For Shito-ryu the numbers diverge, Mabuni’s list from 1937 had 33 kata, according to an analysis of the lists 23 from the Itosu line and 10 from the Higaonna line, Funakoshi’s list from 1922 at most 15.
Pinan and Heian are two readings of the same characters for Itosu’s kata. From the Higaonna line Shito-ryu has, for example, Seipai and Kururunfa, Aoyagi was created by Mabuni himself.

Frequently asked questions
Are Shotokan and Shito-ryu related?
Yes. Funakoshi and Mabuni were both students of Anko Itosu, and Mabuni also added the Naha-te of Kanryo Higaonna. Funakoshi learned some kata from Mabuni.
Why do the same kata have different names?
Funakoshi changed the Okinawan names of kata because of Japanese pronunciation, Pinan is called Heian in Shotokan. Shito-ryu keeps the Okinawan names.
When did Shito-ryu arise?
The sources give the year 1931 or 1934, and the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai registered the style in 1939. Funakoshi did not name Shotokan himself, the name arose from the sign above his hall.
