Karate vs. Kung Fu
Quick answer
Karate arose on Okinawa from native te and Chinese techniques, and the styles Goju-ryu and Uechi-ryu have roots in Fujian. Kung Fu is not a single style but a collective term for the Chinese martial arts, from traditional schools to sport wushu with the disciplines taolu and sanda. Karate was Olympic only in Tokyo 2020, and wushu is not on the Olympic programme.

History and relationship
Karate is a Japanese art with many styles, while Kung Fu is a collective term for the Chinese martial arts, from traditional schools to sport wushu. What links them is the path of Chinese techniques to Okinawa.
- From the 14th century Chinese fighters bring techniques to Okinawa, and karate arises, written 唐手, “Chinese hand”.
- 1873: Kanryo Higaonna leaves for Fuzhou and at home teaches Naha-te, and his student Chojun Miyagi founds Goju-ryu.
- Kanbun Uechi studies Pangai-noon in Fujian, and in 1940 the name Uechi-ryu arises.
- 1905–1936: the writing 空手, “empty hand”, the character changed in 1933, officially on 25 October 1936 in Naha.
- 1928 the Central Guoshu Institute in Nanjing, 1958 the All-China Wushu Association, 1990 the IWUF.
Technique
- WKF kumite: 1 point for a punch to the body, 2 points for a kick to the body, 3 points for a kick to the head, head only with light touch.
- WKF prohibits, among other things, contact to the throat and attacks on the joints, elbows and knees.
- Kyokushin: no hand strikes to the head, kicks to the head allowed.
- Northern styles: kicks and jumps, southern: strong hands and stable stances.
- Internal styles (taijiquan, xingyiquan, baguazhang) build on a relaxed lever of the body, external on strength.
- Qinna, locks on joints and muscles, is part of many styles.
- IWUF sanda: 1 point for a strike to the head or trunk, 2 points for bringing the opponent down.
WKF kumite prohibits attacks on the joints, while in many Chinese styles qinna is part of the teaching. Taolu is judged without an opponent.
Training
| Karate | Kung Fu | |
|---|---|---|
| Pillars of teaching | kihon, kata, kumite | taolu, duilian in pairs, jiti in a group, in some schools sanda |
| Fighting in training | from prearranged yakusoku to free jiyu kumite | full resistance documented in sanda |
| Standing in position | we have not found it | zhan zhuang in the internal styles, from two minutes to two hours |
| Syllabus | JKA: exam in kihon, kata and kumite | CWA duanwei: strike, kick, grab, position, fighting, then everything together |
We have not been able to document the structure of a lesson or the frequency of training for either of the two arts.
Progression and ranks
| Karate | Kung Fu | |
|---|---|---|
| Grades | JKA (Shotokan) 10 kyu and 10 dan, kyokushin 11 kyu | CWA duanwei: 9 duan and 3 preliminary grades |
| Sign of progress | belt colour, colours differ by style | we have not found a uniform belt system |
| Minimum times | JKA: 1 year between 1st and 2nd dan | we have not found it |
| Age | JKA: 3rd dan from 18 years | we have not found it |
In 1924 Gichin Funakoshi introduced the kyu and dan grades in karate after Kano Jigoro. Duanwei assesses ethics, theory, technique and skills, and the ranks of Kung Fu instructors are a source of disputes.
Physical load and risks
- Meta-analysis of 28 studies of competitive kumite (Lystad et al., BJSM 2020): 88.3 injuries per 1,000 starts, head and neck median 57.9%.
- WKF World Championships 2008–2014: 4 concussions in 4,625 bouts.
- Changizi and Rahnama (2017, 51 elite wushu athletes): 6.85 injuries per 1,000 hours, lower limbs 47.6%, discipline not stated.
- Sanda: Vidal et al. (2025, 86 athletes) 3.37 injuries per 1,000 hours.

| Women | at the WKF World Championships since 1980 | we have not found programmes for women only |
| Older age | veteran categories of Shotokan SKDUN up to over 68 years | we have not found a study of Kung Fu in seniors, only studies of taijiquan |
| Disability | WKF para-karate, championships since 2014 | we have not found it |
Children
| Karate | Kung Fu | |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest competition category | WKF U14 (12–13 years), Shotokan SKDUN from 10 years | IWUF taolu: children up to 11 years |
| Protection in competition | WKF up to 14 years: helmet and body protector | taolu without contact, juniors in sanda: instep guards |
| Length of bout or routine | WKF U14: 1.5 minutes | junior routine at least 1:10, sanda round 1:30 |
| Study | Slovak children’s tournaments: 45.3 injuries per 1,000 starts | Tsang et al. (2009): 20 overweight adolescents, 6 months, fat mass no different from tai chi |
Self-defence
- Kumite from prearranged attacks (yakusoku) to free jiyu kumite.
- In WKF the point rules and a light touch to the head limit resistance.
- Kyokushin fights at full contact, without hand strikes to the head.
- Taolu is judged aesthetically, without an opponent.
- Full resistance is documented in sanda: punches, kicks and throws.
- Sanda excludes elbows, chokes and locks, and ground fighting is absent.
In karate the style decides the degree of resistance, in Kung Fu the discipline: a traditional routine, taolu, or sanda. Locks are practised in Wado-ryu karate, in Kung Fu as qinna, and we have not found a study of self-defence with Kung Fu.
Practical use
| Karate | Kung Fu | |
|---|---|---|
| Older age | 89 people around 70 years, 5 months (Witte et al. 2016): improved reactivity and attention | we have not found a study, for taijiquan a meta-analysis of 24 studies (Chen et al. 2023): lower risk of falling |
| Balance | 16 people aged 59–90 years, 5 weeks: dynamic balance 13.6% faster, no control group | we have not found a study outside taijiquan |
| Health in general | we have not found a study | review of 9 observational studies (2008): disease prevention not proven |
| Professional use | we have not been able to document it | sanda at the Whampoa academy, later in the army of the PRC |
The studies concern small groups, short programmes or just one style. No general conclusion about suitability can be drawn from them.

Switching and combining
- Solo forms remain, instead of kata one practises taolu or the routines of a traditional school.
- Goju-ryu and Uechi-ryu both know Sanchin, which tradition derives from the San Chian routine of Fujian White Crane.
- New: zhan zhuang, weapon taolu, in sanda bringing the opponent down for 2 points.
- Solo forms remain, the meaning of kata is analysed in bunkai.
- New: kihon, kyu and dan, Japanese terminology and dojo etiquette.
- For WKF kumite, controlling contact, head only with light touch, no joint locks.
On the left the transition from karate to Kung Fu, on the right from Kung Fu to karate. Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of Shito-ryu, also studied under the Chinese master Go Kenki.
Philosophy
- The suffix do and the dojo kun: character, effort, courtesy.
- Funakoshi’s Niju kun from bushido and Zen: humility, respect, patience.
- Goju-ryu: hardness and softness in breathing in the kata Sanchin and Tensho.
- Wude: the ethical system of the Chinese martial arts.
- Internal styles work with qi and a relaxed lever of the body, external ones with muscular strength.
- The division into internal and external first in 1669 with Huang Zongxi, according to Henning more political than technical.
Forms and terminology
Across its styles karate has roughly a hundred kata, and their meaning is analysed in bunkai. Sport wushu divides taolu into changquan, nanquan, taijiquan and weapon disciplines, plus duilian in pairs and jiti in a group.
A shared form is Sanchin: Goju-ryu has it through the Higaonna and Miyagi line, Uechi-ryu from Pangai-noon together with Seisan and Sanseirui. Patrick McCarthy called the text of the Bubishi, linked with Fuzhou and dated after 1860, the “Bible of karate”.
Training culture
- The Shotokan dojo in Tokyo, built in 1936, or 1939, was destroyed by an air raid in 1945.
- In WKF team kata an opening and a closing bow are mandatory.
- 1964 a demonstration of Chinese boxing at a karate tournament in Long Beach, in the seventies a wave of interest with the films of Bruce Lee.
- Shaolin Temple (1982) with Jet Li revived interest in martial arts in China.
- The character of Wong Fei-hung in more than 100 films and series since 1949.
Common misconceptions
- Bodhidharma taught the monks at Shaolin to fight: the legend comes from the Yijin Jing text of 1624, and the historians Tang Hao, Xu Zhen and Matsuda Ryuchi rejected its attribution to Bodhidharma.
- The Qing dynasty destroyed the Shaolin monastery: the story has contradictory dates and researchers regard it as fiction.
- Kung Fu means martial art: in Chinese gongfu is any skill gained through practice, and the English meaning arose from a misunderstanding in film subtitles.
