Kung Fu vs. Wushu Taolu

Kung Fu功夫More about the art →Wushu Taolu武術套路More about the art →

Quick answer

Kung-fu is an umbrella term for Chinese martial arts, and wushu taolu is a competitive discipline of sport wushu in which referees judge routines, both barehanded and with weapons. Taolu draws on traditional styles but has no opponent, as fighting belongs to sanda. It is not Olympic, and four taolu events are on the program at the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026.

History and relationship

Kung-fu is an umbrella term for Chinese martial arts, from traditional schools to sport wushu. Wushu taolu is a competitive discipline of sport wushu: judged routines, both barehanded and with weapons. Together with sanda, full-contact fighting, it forms one of the two competitive branches of the IWUF, and it is not a separate kung-fu style.

  • 495: the Shaolin monastery was built, and in 1560–1561 General Qi Jiguang described sixteen fighting styles in his manual Jixiao Xinshu.
  • 1928: the Central Guoshu Institute in Nanjing.
  • 1958: the state set up an organization for martial arts training, and the State Commission for Physical Culture and Sport directed the creation of standardized routines, national syllabi and the rating of instructors.
  • 1966–1976: during the Cultural Revolution traditional arts were suppressed and the state promoted regulated competitive wushu in place of independent schools.
  • 1990: three competitions at the Asian Games in Beijing, all taolu (changquan, nanquan, taijiquan), and on 3 October the IWUF was founded, recognized by the IOC in 2002.
  • After 1998 the state supports both traditional styles and modern wushu.

Technique

Kung Fu
  • Northern styles build on kicks and jumps, southern ones on the hands and stable stances.
  • Internal styles work with a relaxed leverage of the body, external ones with explosive force.
  • In competitive sanda, strikes, kicks and throws against an opponent.
Wushu Taolu
  • Changquan: speed, power and flexibility, more acrobatic than nanquan.
  • Nanquan: low stances, many hand techniques, few kicks.
  • IWUF 2019 difficulty: techniques at most 1.40 points, connections 0.60.

Changquan draws on chaquan, huaquan, paoquan and hongquan, and nanquan emerged in the sixties from Cantonese family styles including Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut and Wing Chun. For aesthetic reasons higher jump kicks and lower stances were added, while the applications passed to sanshou.

A review of 10 studies of interval training in wushu athletes (Novita et al., 2026) reports improvements in VO2max, strength and explosiveness, but it does not distinguish between taolu and sanda.

Physical load and risks

Kung Fu
  • Changizi and Rahnama (2017, 51 elite wushu athletes): 6.85 injuries per 1,000 hours, lower limbs 47.6%, discipline not stated.
Wushu Taolu
  • Sousa et al. (Archives of Budo 2010, 82 taolu athletes, 45 sanshou): roughly twice as many injuries in taolu, lower-limb joints 35.4% versus 11.8%.
  • Ribeiro et al. (2006, 4 elite men): during changquan and daoshu a heart rate of 176 per minute, about 89% of maximum.
Taolu involves no contact, and the authors link the higher injury rate to the nature of the discipline. The samples are small. With a health limitation it is advisable to consult a doctor before starting.

Self-defence

Kung Fu
  • Resistance in training differs by discipline and by school.
  • In sanda, strikes, kicks and throws against full resistance.
  • We found no self-defense study with kung-fu.
Wushu Taolu
  • A routine is judged, not a fight.
  • Duilian is pre-arranged, and critics describe its value as reduced to display.
  • We found no self-defense study with taolu.

Many modern styles practice only forms without drilling applications. Sport wushu has training against resistance in sanda.

Switching and combining

Kung Fu
  • The yardstick becomes quality, performance and difficulty as judged by referees.
  • Routines with a minimum length, for adults 1:20, plus jumps and balances.
  • Nanquan also draws on Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut and Wing Chun.
Wushu Taolu
  • Instead of compulsory IWUF routines, the routines of a style and school.
  • Traditional IWUF competitions even after the age of 40.
  • Training against an opponent is offered by sanda.

On the left the move from kung-fu to taolu, on the right the reverse.

Philosophy

Kung Fu
  • Wude, the ethical system of the Chinese martial arts.
  • Gongfu means any skill acquired through patient practice.
Wushu Taolu
  • A sport judged by aesthetic criteria.
  • Jia Yueyi (VUB 2024): Chinese scholars criticize the detraditionalization of wushu when it is adapted to Olympic standards.
  • Critics see acrobatics rather than practical techniques in competitive forms.

Forms and terminology

Forms are the foundation of both. At the 1991 World Championships taolu had changquan, nanquan, taijiquan, daoshu, jianshu, gunshu and qiangshu, in 1999 taijijian, nandao and nangun were added, and in 2003 duilian. Compulsory routines applied in 1993–2005 and again in 2013 and 2015.

Training culture

  • Wuxia exaggerates real arts to a superhuman level.
  • The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple (1928), the first kung-fu action film.
  • The wave of Hong Kong film from The Big Boss (1971) with Bruce Lee.
Wushu Taolu
  • Jet Li on the Beijing wushu team from 1974, his competing ended by a knee injury.

Common misconceptions

  • Wushu was a demonstration at the 1936 Berlin Olympics: an undocumented claim. A documented link to the Olympics begins only with the parallel tournament in Beijing 2008.
  • Bodhidharma taught the Shaolin monks to fight: according to Henning this is a claim invented in the 20th century, and the attribution of the Yijin Jing text to Bodhidharma was rejected early on.
  • In Chinese the word kung-fu denotes a martial art: the English meaning arose from a misunderstanding, mainly in film subtitles and dubbing.
