Definition
A rashguard is a tight-fitting shirt made of elastic material, usually polyester with spandex. It was originally worn for surfing as protection against chafing. In combat sports it spread with grappling without a kimono (no-gi) and with MMA. It protects the skin from abrasions caused by the mat and the opponent and reduces direct skin contact, and with it the transmission of skin infections. Because it fits tightly, it cannot be grabbed. No-gi competitions under IBJJF rules require it.
