About
Sonkal daebi makgi, literally a covering block with the knife hand, is in ITF taekwondo a knife-hand block in which the other hand stays in front of the body and protects it. ITF terminology writes both sonkal and sonnal, both meaning knife hand. The most common is kaunde sonkal daebi makgi at middle level; there is also a low version, sonkal najunde daebi makgi, and a version with a 360-degree turn in a jump. The block opens the tul Dan-Gun, the second ITF form: the first and third movements are a middle covering knife-hand block in L-stance. Unlike the plain knife-hand block, where only one hand works, in the covering version the other hand holds a protective position at the body.
