About
Sang sonkal makgi, literally block with a pair of knife hands, is in ITF taekwondo a simultaneous block with the edges of both hands, called in English the twin knifehand block. ITF writes the knife edge as sonkal, Kukkiwon and WT as sonnal; this is a spelling difference, not a different technique. In the ITF curriculum it is one of ten blocks a black-belt candidate must know in Korean and English. The block in L-stance opens the tul Choong-Moo, which has thirty movements, is taught at the highest colour-belt grades and bears the name of admiral Yi Sun-sin, traditionally builder of the armoured ship geobukseon (turtle ship) of 1592. The tul ends with a left-hand strike symbolising the admiral's early death. The block also appears in the tul Yul-Gok.
