About

Arae makgi (아래막기), literally low block, protects the body against an attack aimed anywhere between the chest and groin. The arm moves from the starting position down to the final blocking position, blocking with the forearm's outer edge. It is not used against leg attacks. In WT taekwondo it is one of the first blocks learned; it already appears in the poomsae Taegeuk Il Jang, the first form for 8th gup. Application breakdowns also list a strike to the groin, a sweep of the front leg, and release from a limb grip. In ITF taekwondo the equivalent block is najunde makgi.
