About Tarung Derajat
Tarung Derajat is an Indonesian full-contact martial art created in Bandung by Achmad Dradjat, known throughout the country by the nickname Aa Boxer. It grew out of his own experience of street confrontations in the 1960s: Dradjat discarded the decorative elements, kept only what had actually worked for him in a real fight, and in 1972 formalised the result as a complete teaching system. The umbrella organisation KODRAT was founded in the same year and still runs the registration of schools, the grading examinations and the competitions. The technical content consists of straight and hooking punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes, sweeps and throws, trained at full intensity on bags, on pads and in hard sparring; the system stresses aggression, speed and the ability to absorb a blow rather than elegance of movement. The grades are called kurata and are numbered in Roman figures. The art spread into the training of the Indonesian army and police, belongs to the competitive disciplines of the national PON games and was placed on the programme of the Southeast Asian Games in 2011, which Indonesia hosted. The greeting and battle cry is Box!, an echo of the founder's nickname.
