About Sankukai
Sankukai is a karate style created by Yoshinao Nanbu, according to English Wikipedia a student of Chōjirō Tani. Wikipedia, in its Shūkōkai article, says sankukai was founded in Paris in 1971. The International Shuriway Karate and Kobudo Society website says only that Nanbu created his own method at 27 and called it Sankukai. According to Shuriway, Nanbu was born in Kobe in 1943 and learned judo from his father, a 5th dan, from the age of five. At Osaka University he discovered karate, according to Shuriway, and followed the masters Tani and Tanaka. In 1968 Tani, according to Shuriway, entrusted him with developing Shukokai in Europe. According to English Wikipedia, Henry Plée financed visits by Japanese and Chinese masters to France, and Nanbu was among them. According to English Wikipedia, Nanbu left sankukai and created nanbudo in 1978. It says several national organizations around the world teach sankukai today. According to Shuriway, Nanbu died on 28 April 2020.
History
According to Shuriway, Nanbu's great-grandfather Yoko Zuna was a known sumo wrestler and his uncle taught him kendo. At Osaka University he became Japan's university champion in 1963, according to Shuriway. English Wikipedia, in its article on Henry Plée, credits Nanbu with the 1962 title of champion of Japan and a 2nd dan in karate from 1964. According to Shuriway, Henry Plée invited him to Europe for competitions, but the source gives no year for it. English Wikipedia says Shukokai outside Japan was taught mainly by three senior instructors, Kimura, Nanbu and Suzuki.
How it differs
English and French Wikipedia both describe sankukai and nanbudo as two different systems of the same founder. French Wikipedia describes nanbudo as an art that Nanbu created in 1978 as already the founder of the Sankukaï karate school. According to English Wikipedia, sankukai comes from the Shūkōkai lineage of Chōjirō Tani, while nanbudo is run, according to its website, by the International Nanbudo Federation.
Today
English Wikipedia says that several national organizations around the world teach sankukai today. Adam Carter says on the Shuriway website that after 1984 he continued sankukai training with Roger Mills in Great Britain. Nanbu's later nanbudo is, according to its website, overseen by the International Nanbudo Federation, founded in the summer of 2010.
