Krav Maga vs. Wing Chun

Krav Magaקרב מגעMore about the art →Wing Chun糸東流More about the art →

Quick answer

Krav Maga and Wing Chun share neither a common root nor a documented mutual influence, only the principle of simultaneous defence and attack. Krav Maga is an Israeli self-defence system without forms, with elbows, kicks, ground fighting and defence against weapons, while Wing Chun is a southern Chinese art for close distance where forms and chi sau are the foundation and which is divided into a number of lineages. Krav Maga has no sports competition, Wing Chun has one only in individual federations, and neither is Olympic.

History and relationship

Krav Maga and Wing Chun share neither a common root nor a documented mutual influence. Krav Maga was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld from boxing, wrestling and street fighting, while the sources describe the origin of Wing Chun in southern China as unknown. They share the principle of simultaneous defence and attack.

  • 19th century: Leung Jan in Foshan, the first well-documented link in the Wing Chun lineage.
  • 1948: Lichtenfeld becomes chief instructor of Krav Maga in the Israeli army.
  • From the early fifties: Ip Man teaches Wing Chun in Hong Kong.
  • 1967 or 1968: the Ving Tsun Athletic Association is founded, and in 1978 the Israeli Krav Maga Association.
  • Ng Mui and Yim Wing-chun are figures of legend.

Technique

Krav Maga
  • Fists, hammer fist, elbows, knees and kicks.
  • Targets such as the eyes, throat and groin.
  • Joint locks, throws, chokes and ground fighting.
  • Defence against a knife, a stick and a firearm.
Wing Chun
  • Close distance, holding the centreline.
  • High narrow stance with elbows close to the body.
  • Fast strikes, finger jabs, elbows and knees.
  • Low kicks and sweeps, some styles discourage high kicks.

Krav Maga takes techniques from several sources and covers the ground and weapons as well. Wing Chun works mainly in forearm contact and tactile sensitivity, and we have not found ground fighting training in the sources.

Krav Maga builds a lesson around scenarios under stress, Wing Chun around forms and sensitivity drills with a partner. We have not been able to confirm the structure of a Wing Chun lesson.

Physical load and risks

Krav Maga
  • 946 injuries of IDF soldiers from training (Military Medicine 2017): mostly mild, most often fingers, hands and wrists (31%), head and neck insignificant.
  • Questionnaire of 109 civilian trainees (Cureus 2024): most often the lower limbs, the data partly contradict each other.
Wing Chun
  • Questionnaire of 24 Ving Tsun practitioners (Adler et al., 2010): injury reported by 79.2%, mostly minor, most often the knees (50%).
  • The examination found no permanent damage, the authors recommend head protection.
The studies follow soldiers and a small group of recreational trainees and cannot be compared directly. With a health limitation, it is advisable to consult a doctor before starting.

Self-defence

Krav Maga
  • Strikes, kicks, joint locks, the ground, weapons and de-escalation.
  • Scenarios with several attackers.
  • Partner resistance limited in some organisations up to G2.
Wing Chun
  • Close distance: strikes and trapping standing.
  • Chi sau develops sensitivity, but it should not be confused with sparring.
  • We have confirmed free fighting only in FFAEMC competitions.

Krav Maga covers all distances, and the degree of resistance depends on the organisation. In Wing Chun it depends on the lineage, and we have not found training in ground fighting and defence against weapons in the sources.

Krav Maga split in disputes over succession after 1998, and Wing Chun has at least eight lineages. A grade is valid only where it was awarded.

Switching and combining

Krav Maga
  • The simultaneity of defence and attack remains.
  • Learning forms and chi sau.
  • A high narrow stance and the centreline instead of hands at the chin.
  • Setting aside joint locks on the ground and defence against weapons.
Wing Chun
  • Sensitivity and close distance from chi sau.
  • Adding ground fighting, throws and chokes.
  • Adding defence against weapons and several attackers.
  • Getting used to stress drills instead of forms.

On the left, the move from Krav Maga to Wing Chun, on the right from Wing Chun to Krav Maga.

Philosophy

Krav Maga
  • Motto according to the IKMF: So that one may walk in peace.
  • Avoiding violence, attack only as a last resort.
  • No Zen elements, a quick end to the fight.
Wing Chun
  • Economy of movement and using the incoming attack.
  • Ip Man compared chi sau to the flexibility of bamboo.
  • Siu nim tau, the little idea, is practised throughout life.

Forms and terminology

This is where the arts differ the most. IKMF Netherlands describes Krav Maga as a system without stylised forms. In Wing Chun, forms are the foundation: siu nim tau, chum kiu and biu jee, a form on the wooden dummy (muk yan jong) and two weapon forms, the butterfly knives bart cham dao and the pole luk dim boon kwan.

  • A military and police branch alongside the civilian one.
  • We have not been able to confirm the salute and the address of the instructor.

  • Lineages by teacher: Ip Man, Yip Chun, Leung Ting, William Cheung.
  • The films Ip Man since 2008 and The Grandmaster (2013).
  • Bruce Lee was a student of Ip Man, and was taught mainly by Wong Shun Leung.

Common misconceptions

  • Krav Maga does not derive from Wing Chun, Lichtenfeld drew on boxing, wrestling and street fighting. The opposite is claimed by the advertising text of one Wing Chun school.
  • Ng Mui and Yim Wing-chun are not documented persons, it is a legend with several versions.
  • Chi sau is not sparring, it is a drill of sensitivity and reflexes.
  • We have not been able to confirm a link between Krav Maga and the Mossad.

Frequently asked questions

Does Krav Maga derive from Wing Chun?

No. Lichtenfeld drew on boxing, wrestling and street fighting, and judo and aikido were added later. Only the principle of simultaneous defence and attack is shared.

Is there sparring in Wing Chun?

It depends on the lineage. Chi sau is not sparring. We have confirmed free fighting only in FFAEMC competitions, the Canadian CWCT does not have it.

Is defence against weapons taught in either of them?

In Krav Maga yes, against a knife, a stick and a firearm. Wing Chun has weapon forms, and we have not found training in defence against a weapon in the sources.
