MMA vs. Krav Maga
Quick answer
MMA is a competitive sport that combines strikes and grappling and tests them in a bout under the Unified Rules, while Krav Maga is an Israeli self-defence system from army training without competition rules. What MMA rules out as a foul, that is the eyes, the groin or the back of the head, Krav Maga trains as a target and adds defence against weapons. Neither is Olympic, MMA has IMMAF amateur championships, and Krav Maga has no sport competitions.

History and relationship
Krav Maga grew out of the experience of the boxer and wrestler Imi Lichtenfeld in street clashes in the thirties and has served the Israeli army since 1948. MMA emerged from Brazilian vale tudo, the Japanese Shooto and Pancrase, and the UFC 1 tournament.
- 1948: Lichtenfeld becomes the chief Krav Maga instructor in the IDF.
- 1985: Satoru Sayama founds Shooto.
- 12 November 1993: Royce Gracie wins UFC 1 in Denver, and the UFC competition is founded by Art Davie, Rorion Gracie and John Milius.
- 1996 and 1997: the Krav Maga instructor Moti Horenstein loses at UFC 10 and UFC 14.
- 1998 and 2001: after Lichtenfeld’s death Krav Maga splits into organisations, and in New Jersey a unified set of MMA rules is created.
Technique
- Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, joint locks and chokes.
- Ground and pound: strikes on a downed opponent.
- The Unified Rules ban groin strikes, strikes to the spine and the back of the head, kicks and knees to the head of a downed opponent, headbutts, biting and eye gouging.
- Punches, the hammer strike, elbows, knees and kicks.
- Joint locks, throws, chokes and ground fighting.
- Targets such as the eyes, throat, groin and knee.
- Defence against a knife, a stick and a firearm.
What MMA rules out as a foul, Krav Maga trains as a target. The techniques allowed in MMA differ by rule set: ONE allows knees to the head of a downed opponent, while IMMAF bans elbows and heel hooks for amateurs. The lifting of the ban on 12-6 elbows was approved by the ABC in 2024, we did not find an effective date and each commission must adopt the change.
Training
| MMA | Krav Maga | |
|---|---|---|
| Pillars of instruction | several disciplines at once, often in a team, conditioning, speed and strength | techniques, stress drills, situational training, sparring |
| Fighting in training | we have not been able to document what sparring looks like | in some organisations up to grade G2 only slow and light |
| Scenarios | we did not find scenarios in the sources, preparation aims at the bout | an ambush in a protective suit, several attackers, a weapon |
We have not been able to document the structure of a session or the training frequency in MMA. IKMF Netherlands counts on 9–18 months of training twice a week before the first exam.
Progression and ranks
| MMA | Krav Maga | |
|---|---|---|
| Belts and grades | none | IKMF patches P, G, E and Master, elsewhere coloured belts as in judo |
| Measure of level | fight record, IMMAF categories | exams at the organisation |
| Before the first exam or bout | we have not been able to document the number of amateur bouts | IKMF Netherlands: at least 45 lessons |
The army programme Modern Army Combatives has four levels of competition rules, and the highest are essentially the MMA rules.
Physical load and risks
- Meta-analysis of 6 studies (Lystad, Gregory and Wilson, 2014): 228.7 injuries per 1,000 exposures, head 66.8–78.0%, after a KO or TKO more than double the injuries compared with a submission.
- Brain Health Study (Bernick et al., 131 MMA fighters): higher exposure to fights associated with a smaller volume of some brain structures, the design does not establish the cause.
- Weight cutting: 31 professionals lost an average of 10.56% of their body weight in 7 days (Frontiers in Nutrition 2025).
- 946 injuries of IDF soldiers from training (2014): mostly mild, most often hands and wrists (31%), head and neck insignificant.
- 109 civilian trainees (Cureus 2024): most often the lower limbs and sprains, the data partly contradict each other.

| Studies and doctors | the AAP report (2016) also covers MMA, we have not been able to document a recommendation or a study of children | we have not been able to document it |
Self-defence
- Full resistance standing, in the clinch and on the ground within the rules.
- The rules rule out the groin, the back of the head, eyes and biting.
- We did not find training against weapons and several attackers in the sources on MMA.
- Strikes, kicks, joint locks, the ground, weapons and de-escalation.
- Scenarios with several attackers.
- The partner’s resistance in some organisations up to G2 is limited.
MMA tests skill against full resistance, but one on one within the rules. Krav Maga covers more situations, and the degree of resistance depends on the organisation. The instructor Gershon Ben Keren admits that part of Krav Maga instruction does not prepare for fighting. We have not been able to document a study of the effect of either.
Practical use
| MMA | Krav Maga | |
|---|---|---|
| Professional use | Modern Army Combatives (Matt Larsen, 2000), the highest level essentially MMA | the Israeli army and police |
| Fitness | we have not been able to document a study of recreational MMA | a lesson from a DVD with 16 people (ACE): 78% of maximum heart rate |
| Studies of women | we have not been able to document one | 16 female university students (PeerJ 2020): 15 minutes of instruction improved both the punch and the kick |
The studies concern small groups, a single lesson or a competition. No general conclusion about suitability can be drawn from them.
Competition
| MMA | Krav Maga | |
|---|---|---|
| Olympic Games | not an Olympic sport | not a competitive sport |
| Bout length | Unified Rules: rounds of 5 min, normally 3, title bouts 5, IMMAF 3 × 3 min | there is no competitive format |

| Main organisations | UFC, ONE Championship, PFL, for amateurs IMMAF | the IDF has held an annual competition since 2013, we have not been able to document its rules |
| Representative in the UFC | not applicable | Moti Horenstein, losses at UFC 10 and UFC 14 in the first round |

Switching and combining
- Experience of fighting against full resistance.
- Takedowns, the sprawl and work on the ground under strikes.
- Adding targets outside the rules, defence against weapons and several attackers.
- Learning on the ground to get up and break free.
- Elbows, knees and kicks from training.
- Learning to fight within rules without strikes to the eyes and groin.
- Getting used to a wrestler: after the UFC Horenstein stated that he had not fought a wrestler before and that this was his weakness.
- Adding conditioning for rounds.
On the left the move from MMA to Krav Maga, on the right from Krav Maga to MMA.
Philosophy
- A sport with written rules, weight classes and referees.
- UFC 1 pitted representatives of different martial arts against each other.
- According to his biographical page, Rorion Gracie wanted to show the superiority of Gracie jiu-jitsu, which was the intent of the founder of the competition.
- The IKMF motto: So that one may walk in peace.
- Priority goes to avoiding violence, with attack only as a last resort.
- Krav Maga Worldwide: the only rule is to survive.
Forms and terminology
Neither has forms. MMA is contested only in bouts, and the Unified Rules know no exercise routine. IKMF Netherlands describes Krav Maga as a functional system without stylised forms, and techniques and scenarios are examined according to the grade.
Training culture
- Training in teams, for example American Kickboxing Academy and American Top Team.
- The name mixed martial arts replaced no holds barred after the opposition of Senator John McCain.
- No belts, the level is shown by the fight record.
- At the IKMF a grade patch on the trousers, elsewhere belts as in judo.
- A military and police branch alongside the civilian one.
- We have not been able to document the greeting and the form of address of the instructor.
Common misconceptions
- MMA is not without rules: already UFC 1 banned biting and eye gouging, although only under a fine, and today weight classes, rounds and referees apply.
- Bruce Lee did not invent MMA. The designation father of MMA comes from Dana White, and we were not able to trace its origin.
- The sources list pankration as a predecessor similar to MMA, not as a direct ancestor.
- Krav Maga does not have one organisation: IKMF, KMG, Krav Maga Worldwide and IKMA each have their own grades.
- We have not been able to document a link between Krav Maga and the Mossad.
