Definition

Kihap literally means "concentration of energy." When performing powerful techniques, breaking boards (kyokpa), or at key moments in poomsae (forms), the practitioner exhales loudly and sharply. The sound originates from the diaphragm rather than the throat, ensuring contraction of the abdominal muscles, which gives the body maximum stability and resistance against a possible counterattack. Kihap also helps overcome psychological blocks, provides courage, and can momentarily paralyze the opponent. Every practitioner has their own distinctive shout.
