Definition

Capoeira practically does not use traditional blocks; the philosophy of this art dictates letting the strike pass by evading it and letting its energy flow through. Esquiva (evasion) is performed by lowering the center of gravity, leaning to the side, or leaning back. Staying low to the ground allows the player not only to avoid an incoming kick but also to immediately counterattack from that position with their own kick (e.g., meia lua de compasso) or a sweep. A well-timed esquiva is fluid and blends smoothly into the basic ginga movement.
