About

Yama zuki (山突き), literally mountain punch, is a wide punch with both fists at once. One fist targets the upper level, the other the middle level, and the arms together form a shape like a mountain, hence the name. In Shotokan, yama zuki appears in the katas Bassai Dai and Wankan. The Kyokushin body KWF lists it as seiken yama tsuki, item 52 on its list of hand strikes, and teaches it only at 2nd kyu, shortly before black belt. Who named the strike and when it first appeared, we have not been able to document.
