About
Ura zuki is a short close-range punch in which the fist stays inverted. It targets the solar plexus and in character resembles an uppercut. The arm does not extend fully, so ura zuki is used where there is no room for a full punch. This sets it apart from gyaku zuki, a fully extended reverse punch. Ura zuki is also part of the combined technique yama zuki. In the Shotokan kata Kanku Dai (JKA numbering) it is the 42nd movement, and in Tekki Shodan movements 9b and 23b.
