About
Sukui uke (掬い受け), literally scooping block, scoops up the opponent's attacking limb and catches it, as if scooping it. Shotokan technique lists as well as general overviews of karate techniques give the two-handed form morote sukui uke, a scooping block with both hands; other terminology overviews call it sweeping block. Among the blocks of karate, it belongs to the advanced blocks typical of kata, which require good timing. It can be performed with an open or a closed hand and works best when the practitioner stands in place or advances forward, not while retreating. Which kata train sukui uke and who introduced it, we have not been able to document.
