About

Sonnal deung (손날등), literally back of the knife hand, is a striking surface opposite sonnal, the knife hand. It forms by tucking the thumb into the palm and covers a few centimeters of the inner hand below the index finger's first knuckle. Taekwondo strikes with it, for example vertically downward, sonnal deung naeryeo chigi, to the eyes, nose, collarbone, or shoulders; the arm must stay fully extended so the elbow is not injured. It is one of the black belt exam techniques. The surface also blocks: in the poomsae Sipjin it performs a spreading middle-level block and a block supported by the other hand. In WT competition, striking the opponent's face is prohibited.
