About

Shuto gedan barai is a low sweeping block with the knife-hand (shuto); SmartDojo classifies it among the blocks (uke waza). It differs from gedan barai, which sweeps a low attack with the fist and forearm, in that its blocking surface is the edge of the open hand. In Shotokan kata (JKA listings) it appears in Kanku Dai as movements 16, 36 and 44 and in Gankaku as movement 11.
