About
Sewo jireugi (세워지르기), in English vertical punch, is a taekwondo fist strike with the fist turned vertical. Power comes from rotating the torso and hips, fingers clenched, thumb tucked in, knuckles pointing forward; the aim point is 10 to 15 centimetres beyond the target surface, to transfer maximum energy. It targets the chest, sternum, abdomen or ribs. Both Kukkiwon-based teaching and ITF terminology use the term; dotaekwondo.net lists it in the ITF syllabus for 3rd degree black belt, and the club Trident TKD has a double variant, sang sewo jirugi, for blue belt, 4. kup. It differs from baro jireugi in fist orientation on impact.
