Quick Facts
About
Seiryuto, in English ox jaw, is in karate a strike with the lower hand edge near the wrist, the base of shuto. The same hand shape also serves as a block, seiryuto uke. English Wikipedia lists it among the natural weapons of Shotokan alongside kumade and washide. The characters 青竜刀, according to the Japanese dictionary Kotobank, literally mean sword of the azure dragon and in Chinese denote a broad single-edged weapon on a long shaft, the guandao, which legend attributes to the general Guan Yu. The technique thus only borrows its name from the weapon. It differs from haito uchi in striking surface: haito strikes with the inner edge of the hand along the index finger, seiryuto with the lower hand edge near the wrist.
