About

Otoshi uke, literally dropping block, is according to the Glossaria.net glossary a block with the forearm or palm heel led from above downward. A variant is shotei otoshi uke, with the palm heel. According to The Digi Dojo, otoshi is a general principle of downward movement using gravity: power comes not from the arm muscles but from the body's drop and the knees and hips. The same principle underlies otoshi osae uke and otoshi tettsui uke, dropping block with the hammer fist. In the Shotokan kata Tekki Sandan (JKA listing) it is movements 3 and 20.
