About

Nami gaeshi (波返し), literally the returning wave, also called wave foot kick, is a leg technique between a kick and a block. The leg draws back like a wave and kicks out at once. The shortened name nami ashi is also used. In the Shotokan kata Tekki Shodan (JKA numbering) it is movement 11a, 13a, 25a and 27a. According to the Ginryu Karate interpretation, there it serves as a defense against a low kick to the shin, combined with a counterstrike or a sweep.
