About
Nagashi uke, literally flowing block, does not stop the attack with force but deflects it aside. According to the New Zealand IOGKF it lets the defender "ride" the attack and open the opponent for a counter; it is cited as characteristic of Wado-ryu. The website karatespektra.cz distinguishes nagashi uke from haiwan nagashi uke, performed with the back of the arm. In Shotokan kata (JKA listings) it appears in six kata, among others all three Tekki: Tekki Shodan (9a and 23a), Tekki Nidan (16a and 24a) and Tekki Sandan (movements 4, 16a, 21 and 36). Further in Heian Godan (21a and 23a), Kanku Dai (movements 19 and 24) and Bassai Dai (25a).
