Quick Facts
About
Twimyo dwi chagi, a jumping back kick, builds on the basic back kick dwi chagi, which Kukkiwon defines as striking the target by bending the knee and kicking backward; the strike lands with the heel. The jumping version adds a take-off and the kick delivered in the air. The basic dwi chagi is taught from yellow to green belt, and its typical mistakes include unsteady height and distance, poor timing, and loss of balance from turning too far. The kick has no fixed Korean name. Sources use the spellings 뛰며 뒤차기, 뛰어 뒤차기 and 점프 뒤 차기, and neither Kukkiwon nor ITF terminology lists it as a standalone term. ITF knows the related twigi dwitcha jirugi, a jumping back thrusting kick, which differs from it in how the name is built. Overviews of taekwondo techniques also list jumping kicks as a group, ttwieo chagi.
