About

Hizakutsu dachi is a kneeling stance, which Zeppe's kata analyses describe as hizakutsu (gyaku zenkutsu), a kneeling variant of zenkutsu dachi with reversed positioning. It differs from orishiki in Empi: orishiki is a separate kneeling stance (hiza dachi), while hizakutsu derives from zenkutsu dachi. In the Shotokan kata (JKA numbering) it appears in five kata. In Bassai Dai it is the 11th, 13th, 38th and 39th movement; in the 11th and 13th, uchi uke is performed in it at the middle level. In Empi it is the 8th, 12th and 28th movement, in Gankaku 22nd and 23rd, in Heian Yondan 11b, and in Kanku Dai the 7th and 9th movement.
