Quick Facts
About
Haishu uke (背手受け), literally back-hand block, deflects an attack with the back of the open hand, the opposite side from the one the shuto knife edge uses. The Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) states that the back of the hand serves both for blocking and deflecting and for striking the face, solar plexus or abdomen. Among the open-hand blocks of karate it belongs to the group usually followed by a grab of the attacking limb. In Shotokan it appears in the kata Heian Godan.
