About

Escorão is a standing capoeira kick: the rear leg draws back and strikes the opponent's stomach with the foot. The English Wikipedia describes it as a deceptive version of the bênção kick: the player first draws the leg back, feigning a retreat, then quickly sends it into the opponent's stomach. The feigned retreat is meant to confuse where the attack will come from. Bênção, from which escorão derives, comes from the Angolan engolo, regarded as a predecessor of capoeira. Sources differ on its execution. The Portuguese Wikipedia distinguishes escorão from the related esporão kick: the rear leg passes behind the practitioner in a turn similar to armada, while the English Wikipedia mentions no turn. Who introduced the kick, we have not been able to document.
