About
Arae eotgeoreo makgi (아래 엇걸어막기), the low crossed block, catches an attack from below with the wrists crossed over each other, pressing down against it. Kukkiwon terminology places eotgeoreo makgi, the crossed block, in the georeo makgi group; there is a low and a high variant. The block starts at the hip opposite the front leg, blocking with the outer side of the wrist and forearm. Beware of confusion: arae makgi alone is, in Kukkiwon terminology, a different technique, the plain downward block naeryeo makgi, though it shares the word arae. The crossed low block is taught from blue belt, and appears twice in the poomsae Taegeuk Chil Jang, once right over left and once the reverse, always from a front stance.
