About
Coup de pied bas, literally a low kick, is a kick of French savate to the opponent's shin. It strikes with the inner edge of the boot, not with the toe as in fouetté nor the heel as in chassé, and the technique is typified by a backward lean of the body during the kick. It is also written in short as coup bas. The aim is to hit the shin and disrupt the opponent's stance, usually as a preparatory or accompanying technique for a further attack. Unlike fouetté, chassé, and revers, which target three heights, coup de pied bas is limited to the low level only. At the assaut competitive level referees penalise excessive kicking force, and low kicks are judged for precision of execution. The technique comes from the Parisian savate tradition, which, unlike the southern French chausson, used low kicks and heavy footwear.
