About
Cocorinha is an evasive movement (esquiva) of capoeira in which the player drops into a squat with the knees drawn to the chest and closes the body. One arm guards the side of the torso and the head, the other braces flat on the ground, and the weight stays on the feet. There is also a variant in which the arms cross to guard the face instead of bracing on the ground. The English Wikipedia lists it together with resistência among two types of defensive crouch. It serves to evade high kicks and attacks to the head or sides. Unlike queda de quatro, which creates distance from the opponent, cocorinha can be performed right next to the opponent, so the player stays in contact with the game. From the squat one can flow smoothly into low movements such as negativa, and armada often follows as the continuing attack. In teaching it is one of the movements for beginners. Who introduced the movement and where its name comes from, we have not been able to document.
