About Systema Ryabko
Systema Ryabko is an original school of Russian Systema led by Mikhail Ryabko (1961–2023). Ryabko served for roughly ten years from 1983 in special forces units and derived his form of Systema from that experience; he himself called it simply by the Russian word Systema, meaning "system". The school's main centre, called Martial Arts of Ancient Rus, is based in Moscow.

We have not been able to document the year the school was founded. Sources from 2017 speak of roughly thirty years of history, but we found no specific date in any of them. The founder, by contrast, is documented, and for Systema that matters — it is a family of schools in which the individual lines differ from each other more than the techniques within them do. Training has a defined sequence: it starts with breathing work and one's own inner state, continues with strikes and grappling, and ends with work with objects, among them the stick, the chain and the entrenching tool. We found no formal grades or instructor certification in the available sources, so progress is guided by the teacher, not by a grading syllabus. The school claims two roots at once: the martial tradition of the ancient Slavs and twentieth-century Russian military practice. The first is a historical claim we have not been able to document, the second is documented by the founder's biography — and it is honest to keep them apart. Ryabko left behind a network of more than fifty schools worldwide. He died in April 2023.
