Quick Facts
GermanyBiography
Hanko Döbringer was a cleric and fencing master of the 14th century. The dates of his birth and death we have not been able to verify.
The manuscript MS 3227a, the so-called Pol Hausbuch from around 1400, contains a short appendix to Liechtenauer's Recital, which Döbringer co-wrote with three other masters: Andres Jude, Jobs von der Nyssen and Nicklas Preuße. The text attributed to him also appears in the Glasgow Fechtbuch (MS E.1939.65.341) from 1508, as the only part documented in more than one fechtbuch at once.
Döbringer is often mistakenly credited with authorship of the entire Pol Hausbuch, although he wrote only one section; the anonymous author of the rest of the manuscript is therefore referred to as Pseudo-Hans Döbringer. Paulus Kal does not list him among the members of the Liechtenauer Society. The first English edition of his text was published in 2008, in Żabiński's translation.
