Sambo vs. Combat Sambo
Quick answer
Combat sambo is not a separate art but the competitive form of sambo with the same throws, holds and joint locks in the kurtka. The FIAS 2023 rules add punches, kicks, elbows, knees and chokes, a mandatory helmet, gloves and protectors, and categories only from the age of 18. Both forms share the FIAS World Championship, and neither is on the Olympic programme.

History and relationship
Sambo arose in the USSR in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century, and combat sambo is not a separate art but its competitive form with strikes. Both forms are governed today by FIAS. We have not found the year of origin of the combat branch or its founder in the sources.
- 1923: according to the European federation EuroSambo, two branches of sambo begin to develop, sport and combat.
- Vasily Oshchepkov and Viktor Spiridonov developed originally separate styles, which later merged.
- 16 November 1938: the All-Union Committee for Physical Culture and Sport recognises sambo as an official sport.
- 2001 or 2002 in Panama: the first world championship in combat sambo, the sources differ on the year.
- From 2003 to 2006 the world championships in the two forms were held in different cities, from 2007 in one.
- 2015: women for the first time in combat sambo (Paris Grand Prix), 2020: the Professional Combat Sambo League is founded.
Technique
- Throws, holds and painful holds in the kurtka, without strikes.
- Painful holds only against an opponent on the ground, banned standing (FIAS 2023).
- Joint locks on arms and legs, banned are twisting the heel, leg knots, a knee lever against the bend and scissors on the knee and ankle.
- Chokes banned.
- A 20-second hold for 4 points.
- Punches, kicks, elbows, forearms and knees to the front and side of the head and trunk (FIAS 2023).
- Head strikes only when both wear helmets, elbows and head strikes to the head on the ground banned.
- Strikes on the ground only when both fighters are on the ground.
- Chokes allowed for up to a minute, standing and on the ground, joint locks also at most a minute, a knot and finger locks banned.
- Banned targets: nape, crown, throat, collarbone, lower back, tailbone and groin.
Throws, holds and joint locks in the kurtka are common to both forms. Combat sambo adds strikes standing and on the ground and chokes, which the sport rules prohibit, and a bout can also end by knockout.
Training
| Sambo | Combat Sambo | |
|---|---|---|
| Lesson structure | we have not found a source | we have not found a source |
| What is practised for competition | throws, holds, joint locks | in addition strikes, kicks, chokes and strikes on the ground |
| Documented measurements | — | Tron et al. (2013): wrestling skill tests, 100 punches and 50 kicks on a bag in 94 competitors |
We have not found in the sources how clubs divide or combine the training of sport and combat sambo. The FIAS rules describe only the competition. Among combat sambo competitors, performance was most closely related to wrestling skill tests, not to strikes.

- Lapaeva et al. (Translational Sports Medicine 2025): questionnaire of 61 injured adults, 74% sambo and 26% judo.
- Knee 39.3%, shoulder 31.1%, elbow 26.2%, anterior cruciate ligament rupture 24.5%.
- Rapid weight reduction before a competition was associated with injury in competition (OR 5.59).

- No study found has measured the load on the head from strikes under the FIAS 2023 rules.

| Protection | chokes banned in all categories, parental consent for moving to an older group (2015) | the FIAS 2022 technical sheet prescribes gloves with thicker padding for youth and cadets |
| Studies of injuries in children | we have not found any | we have not found any |
Self-defence
- Full resistance in throws, in the fight for grip and on the ground.
- No strikes, so defence against them is not practised in competition training.
- According to the source, the self-defence form of sambo focuses on defence against weapons, but it is unrelated to the sport rules.
- Full resistance standing with punches and kicks, in throws and on the ground with strikes, joint locks and chokes.
- Helmet, gloves and protectors are mandatory, some targets and techniques are banned.
- The rules are competitive and without weapons.
In competition, combat sambo combines strikes, throws and ground fighting, while sport sambo has only throws and the ground. We have not found a source on the usability of either form outside the competition rules.
Practical use
| Sambo | Combat Sambo | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin in professional use | developed by the Red Army and other services for close combat, Oshchepkov taught at army and militia courses | the sources do not distinguish the application of sambo by police and army for the combat form separately |

| Studies of adults | the study by Lapaeva et al. 2025 only on injuries | Tron et al. (2013): 94 competitors aged 18–30, the benefit of training was not measured |
The studies describe injured athletes or advanced competitors. The general suitability of sport or combat sambo for a particular group of adults cannot be inferred from them.

| Other competitions | World Games 1985 and 1993, European Games 2019 | WCSF, Professional Combat Sambo League since 2020 |
Both forms belong under one FIAS World Championship. The main difference in scoring is the hold: in sport sambo it is worth double, while in combat sambo a bout can also be decided by a strike. Neither form is on the Olympic programme, and FIAS has had full IOC recognition since 2021.
