About Byakuren Kaikan
Byakuren kaikan, officially NPO hojin Kokusai karate kenpo renmei Byakuren kaikan, is according to the school's website a karate organization headquartered in Higashi-Osaka, which reports 60 branches in Japan and 20 abroad. It was founded by Masayasu Sugihara, whom the National Diet Library lists with the birth year 1951. Fukuoka Prefecture mentions the 40th anniversary of the founding in 2024, which matches the year 1984 given by both Wikipedias. According to the Japanese Wikipedia, Sugihara was an official of Shorinji kempo and a member of the personal guard of the founder Doshin So. To test the combat usability of Shorinji kempo, he entered a Seidokaikan tournament, for which he was expelled from Shorinji kempo, and then founded Byakuren kaikan with his associates. History
According to English Wikipedia, Masayasu Sugihara was born in Osaka in 1951, trained mainly in Shorinji kempo, reached 6th dan by the age of 28, and was a bodyguard and close student of Doshin So. According to the same source, in 1983 he entered a nationwide Seidokaikan tournament under the name Byakuren Kaikan and in 1984 formally founded the style. Japanese Wikipedia states that he was expelled from Shorinji kempo for entering. According to Japanese Wikipedia, the organization was at first called Kokusai kenpo renmei and in 1988, when further organizations joined, was renamed Kokusai karate kenpo renmei. English Wikipedia explains the name Byakuren in three ways, as a reference to Sugihara's former guard unit, to a Shorinji kempo technique, and to his return to the white belt. In 2004, for the 20th anniversary, the school held its first world tournament in Osaka, according to English Wikipedia. Fukuoka Prefecture states that for the 40th anniversary a W.K.O. Karate World Cup was announced for 10 November 2024 at Edion Arena Osaka.
Technique
According to English Wikipedia, Byakuren kaikan divides techniques, as Shorinji kempo does, into goho, meaning hard techniques, and juho, meaning soft techniques. The school's own technique is gyakuwaza joint locks, as stated in the subtitle of Sugihara's 2011 book Full contact karate, and the National Diet Library also lists a 2004 title, Gyakuwaza no gokui. English Wikipedia further states that the school uses sabaki to evade and counterattack and that the fighting stance is relaxed and natural. In competition fighting, grabbing and pulling are prohibited, according to the same source.
Training
According to English Wikipedia, training includes goho, juho, strength and conditioning, and tameshiwari at higher grades. Kumite is central from the lower grades according to the same source, while kata are limited to modified forms used mainly in belt examinations. According to the school's website, the headquarters has a beginner class for white, yellow and blue belts up to 3rd kyu, teaching tsuki, keri and uke, and an intermediate and advanced class for green, brown and black belts from 2nd kyu, practicing combinations, sabaki and kumite. It also has classes for children from the last year of kindergarten, for women and for seniors. The website says the children's classes stress courtesy and education against bullying, and puts the enrollment fee at 5,000 yen and the monthly fee at 6,000 yen.
Competition
According to the Japanese Wikipedia, the rules correspond to full-contact karate with no hand strikes to the head, grabbing, throws or ground fighting. The English Wikipedia states that protective gear is worn in training and matches, but not in black belt competitions, and that the school has held tournaments since 1985. According to the 2026 application form, the all-Japan championship has for men lightweight up to 65 kg, middleweight 65 to 75 kg and heavyweight above 75 kg, and for women two categories with a 53 kg limit. According to the school's website, its 41st edition was held on 12 October 2026 at the Towa yakuhin RACTAB Dome, and fighters from other schools won medals too. The school's 2026 calendar also lists regional tournaments Zen Kanto, Zen Chubu, Zen Kyushu, Zen Tohoku, Hokkaido, Okinawa and Zen Kansai. Fukuoka Prefecture mentions the 19th Kyushu-wide championship from June 2024, whose winner qualified for the W.K.O. Karate World Cup.
