About Varma kalai

Varma kalai is an Indian art of pressure points that combines massage, traditional medicine, classical yoga, and martial technique. Its foundation is work with the so-called varmam, the vital points of the human body, which according to tradition can either injure or heal a person when struck. This duality defines the entire discipline and is reflected in how it is divided. The healing branch is called vaidhiya murai and forms part of Siddha medicine; the martial branch is known as adimurai, and within it exists varma adi, literally a strike to a pressure point, which is taught only at advanced levels — not only within adimurai itself, but also in Kalaripayattu and silambam. According to tradition, the god Murugan passed the art on to the sage Agastya in the form of one hundred and eight varmam. In Tamil Nadu and neighboring Kerala, it is generally only the Agastya lineage that is practiced today. An interesting testament to how far the interest in the body's vulnerable points extends comes from the collections of Sri Lankan national museums: they preserve descriptions of at least eighty-six points called nila on elephants, including their function. Varma kalai is thus not limited to humans, nor is it purely a martial discipline — it is a system of bodily knowledge that can be turned in either direction, toward harm or toward healing. For the catalogue, varma kalai is a borderline case: in the sources it appears alternately as an independent art and as an advanced layer of other Tamil disciplines.
