Uchikomi / Repetition Drilling
打ち込み
Repetitive practice of entering a throw without completing it, a fundamental training method in Judo.
Quick Facts
Definition
Uchikomi is a Judo training method involving the repeated, rapid practice of the entry phase of a throw (kuzushi and tsukuri) without actually completing the technique by taking the partner down. Through hundreds or even thousands of repetitions, the practitioner refines correct off-balancing, body positioning, and grip without physically throwing the partner, which spares both practitioners' joints during high-volume training. Uchikomi can be performed either statically in place or while moving (idoo-geiko), with both partners advancing across the tatami. The method is regarded as one of the fundamental pillars of Judo training alongside randori (free sparring) and is an essential part of preparing for higher technical proficiency. Thanks to its high repeatability, uchikomi helps build the automatic muscle memory needed for a fast and precise throw in an actual match.
