Definition

Tachiai is the moment the bout begins, when both opponents surge forward from their crouch and collide in a violent clash of shoulders and arms, with the speed and angle of this collision often determining the rest of the fight. The rules require that at the moment of the charge, both wrestlers have both fists or open palms touching the ground simultaneously; if one moves early, the referee (gyōji) halts the action by calling matta and the start is repeated. Experienced wrestlers use tachiai differently: some drive straight forward for maximum impact, while others dodge sideways (a technique called henka) to use the opponent's own momentum against him. The power and technique of this first contact is often so decisive that many sumo bouts end literally within a single second of the tachiai. Training for tachiai therefore forms the core of a wrestler's daily preparation, practiced repeatedly by ramming into a wooden post called a teppō.
