Definition
Submission (in English “yielding”, in Portuguese finalização) is a way of winning in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, grappling, sambo or MMA. The fighter applies a joint lock or a choke and the opponent gives up the match. The word also denotes the techniques themselves that lead to this, for example an elbow lock or a choke from behind. The opponent gives up by tapping out (tapout) or verbally. If the opponent does not give up and cannot continue, for example loses consciousness, the referee also ends the match. In BJJ a submission ends the match regardless of the score.
