Definition
Noto is the final phase of every form in Iaido. It is performed without watching the sword with the eyes; the practitioner looks forward, maintaining zanshin. The fingers of the left hand, which holds the scabbard (saya), guide the back of the blade (mune) so that the tip (kissaki) slides smoothly into the mouth of the scabbard (koiguchi). Once the sword is sheathed, the thumb of the left hand secures it against being accidentally drawn again. The whole movement must radiate calm, control, and confidence after the fight has ended.
