Definition

Kyoshi (教士) consists of the characters 教, to teach, and 士, man, warrior. It is the middle of the three shogo teaching titles: hanshi stands above it, renshi below. The titles are awarded alongside the technical dan grades and express maturity as a teacher. In kendo, a holder of renshi and seventh dan may apply for kyoshi two years after obtaining it at the earliest. He must pass an assessment, obtain a recommendation from the chairman of the regional organization, and pass an examination in kendo theory. For renshi, the lowest of the three, sixth dan and a one-year wait are enough.
