Quick Facts
Definition
In Indonesian and Malay Pencak Silat, jurus refers to a fixed sequence of movements, strikes, kicks, and stances that a student practices alone or with a partner in order to master the basic techniques and movement principles of a given school (aliran). Unlike Japanese kata, jurus tend to be shorter and more modular – individual jurus can be combined and strung together into longer sequences as teaching requires. Each Silat school has its own set of jurus, which vary according to regional style, emphasis on edged weapons or unarmed combat, and the philosophical focus of that tradition. Practicing jurus develops not only physical technique but also inner concentration, rhythm, and fluidity of movement, which are characteristic of Pencak Silat. Advanced students subsequently apply the learned jurus in an application drill called sambut, where the technique is tested in interactive exchange with a partner.
