Definition

Guard pull is a common strategy in modern sport BJJ. Instead of attempting a takedown or throw, the practitioner deliberately breaks off the standing exchange and sits or drops to their back. While doing so, they control the opponent using grips on the collar, sleeves, or legs, immediately pulling them into their defensive or offensive position (guard). This technique minimizes the risk of the opponent scoring points for their own takedown and allows the grappler to start working on submissions right away.
