About

Soto yoko uchi, literally outer side strike, is a tonfa strike delivered sideways along an outside path. In the basic tonfa-jutsu kihon, as given by Ryukyu-Kobujutsu.org, it is the ninth of eleven techniques, directly after uchi yoko uchi, its counterpart with an inside path. The Shima-Kai school of the Canadian Ryukyu Kobujutsu Association also lists both directions as two separate techniques, translating them as outer and inner side strike. The tonfa can be held in one of three grips: honte mochi (natural grip), gyakute mochi (reverse grip) and tokushu mochi (special grip). The power of the strike should come from a large movement of the shoulder, not from the wrist. We have not been able to document which target the strike primarily aims at or who placed it in the basic series.
