About
Sumi otoshi (隅落), literally corner drop, is a judo throw from the te waza group of hand techniques. The Judo Channel portal also gives its other name, kuki nage, the air throw. According to the description on judo.how, tori breaks the opponent's balance diagonally backwards into the right rear corner, so that the weight falls onto the right heel. Tori steps wide with the left foot outside the opponent's right foot, lifts with the right hand and pulls down with the left, so the opponent cannot shift weight onto the left foot. Sumi otoshi was one of the original forty throws compiled by Jigoro Kano; it belongs to the fifth group of the gokyo no waza and is also in today's list of the 67 Kodokan throws. Judo Channel recommends using it when the opponent attacks forward, or when he stops an attack and retreats, and notes that although it looks like a pure hand technique, it requires the whole body. It starts the same way as uki otoshi: the opponent is first provoked into a step back and then into a return step forward. An aikido technique bears the same name, but it belongs to a different art and has its own classification.
