Quick Facts
About
Stoccata is a thrust of Italian rapier fencing. A glossary of Italian fencing terms describes it as a rising thrust: the point of the weapon is led toward the opponent from below upward, along a rising path. The term is documented in Italian rapier treatises, among others in Ridolfo Capo Ferro's work Gran Simulacro dell'Arte e dell'Uso della Scherma from 1610. Stoccata belongs to the system of Italian rapier fencing and to the repertoire of today's historical European martial arts (HEMA) reconstructions. It differs from the related imbroccata in direction: imbroccata is a thrust led from above and downward, while stoccata aims upward. We have not been able to document either the literal meaning of the name or who introduced the term into fencing terminology.
